When you're focusing on work, be it at home or in the office, the last thing you need is a loud whirring noise distracting you. That's where the Duux Globe Table Fan comes in; operating at just 13dB on the low settings, it's impressively quiet. As you speed up the fan, it will understandably be louder, but at 42dB on the highest setting, it's still pretty quiet in comparison to other fans, earning it a coveted 'Quiet Mark' award. Tower fans are similar to pedestal fans and are designed to cool an entire room. They are tall and slim, taking up less space than a pedestal fan, but are usually more expensive. Additionally, tower fans have a modern and minimalist appearance compared to pedestal and desk fans. How to choose the best desk fan for you

Size: 38 x 28 x 28cm | Weight: 3.4kg | Oscillation angle: 90˚| Cord length: 2m | Warranty: Two years | Noise level: 13 to 42dB | Power: 14 watts Our verdictBest of all, though, this fan is rechargeable and can run for up to 16 hours at a time before needing to be recharged – while it’s charging, you can just run it on USB power. For such an appealingly low price, it’s a great deal. Meaco is much, much better than Dyson, really quiet and works an absolute treat. The Dyson we have just seems to push warm air around, whereas our Meaco cools beautifully. We have this one." (Tried and tested by Mumsnet user TheSaucepanMan) Our verdict Size: 43 x 36 x 15 cm | Weight: 4kg | Oscillation angle: N/A | Cord length: Not specified | Warranty: Not specified | Noise level: 41 to 58 dB | Power: 40 watts Our verdict We put desktop fans through a battery of tests. We measure the speed of the airflow through the fan at a distance of 1m with an anemometer, being sure to test at both maximum and minimum speed settings, plus a medium setting in between. We also measure the sound levels at these settings, along with power consumption at the highest and lowest. From there, we use the fan in a variety of rooms to gauge how effectively they work in different situations and layouts, using different modes and oscillation settings where available. We also try out any “special” modes and get to grips with both the built-in controls and the remote control, if supplied.

The motor technology in desk fans has really moved on over the years and you can get a decent cooling airflow with fairly low noise levels from the smaller desk fans (as opposed to larger pedestal or tower fans). That said, the slightly larger models are a little more efficient at blasting out air. Will a desk fan cool a room? Size: 27 x 54 x 35 cm | Weight: 3.81kg | Oscillation angle: Not specified | Cord length: 1.8m | Warranty: Not specified | Noise level: Not specified | Power: Not specified Our verdictWithin those parameters, it’s still a great desk fan. It’s noisy at its highest settings, putting out nearly 60dB at full tilt, but at lower levels it’s fine for daytime use. The Meaco and Dimplex fans will dish out more airflow, but the Q will easily cool an area of a room and you can happily leave it on low if you’re sitting nearby. What’s more, the removable grille makes it easy to clean the fan and keep it in top-notch condition. If all you care about is function, you can save some cash by buying something else – but if form and style matter more in your home, the Q is the designer fan to get.
