About this deal

The Scottish biting midge is of the genus Culicoides and its species name is Culicoides impunctatus.

For the face and neck, some visitors to such areas choose to invest in a midge net, which is a mesh hood worn over the head. Once they have a whiff of our tasty CO2 emissions, they hone in on our body heat, movement and of course, exposed fleshy bits. A compact, lightweight mosquito and midge head net hat made with fine black mesh with 1001 holes per square inch. While feeding, midges release an anti-coagulant substance into the bite wound to which our immune system responds.

As you’d expect with a balm, a little goes a long way so it lasts for ages and is another great-smelling natural product. There are a range of products to stop midge bites itching which are also effective for relief from other insect bites, such as horse flies and mosquitoes.

Although DEET and DMP are more effective than non-DEET or natural insect repellents, they are capable of melting some plastics (such as credit cards, glasses and synthetic clothing) and that isn’t really something we want to put our skin. Another argument used in favour of widespread midge control (if not outright eradication) is that, while they do play a role in the food chain – eaten by a range of bats and birds and other creatures – those creatures would, if midges were gone, just eat something else. These are the names of the mountains in the background, by the way, not the women in the foreground. Astoundingly, during the height of summer, when midges are at their worst, these tiny creatures can be a true impediment to forestry, agriculture, and for all those spending time working outdoors. The midge then excretes saliva into the wound, which keeps the blood from coagulating, creating a pool of blood upon which to feed. Trespass Team is a passionate group of outdoor enthusiasts and experts hailing from the renowned UK brand, Trespass. Wearing light-coloured clothing may attract fewer midges as, like goths, midges seem to prefer dark colours.

Come to think of it, the fact that it was early October may have helped a little, though I had been eaten alive while photographing the Glenfinnan Viaduct just a few days earlier, on an equally sunny day. While midges do bite at any time of the day, you are less likely to be bitten if you avoid spending time outdoors at the beginning and end of the day. And in the name of sisterhood, once a midge has found a tasty meal, they release pheromones to alert nearby swarms that food is nearby! They usually come in their own little pouch so you can easily clip it onto your bag, coat or belt with a carabiner. Anti-Histamines – It’s a good idea to carry some anti-histamines in your first aid pack, especially if you’ve not encountered midges before and are unsure as to how you would react to their bite.
