About this deal

While the story is a new one, the world is the same and this familiarity provides a comfortable awareness to what goes on and what to expect. From intricacies of plotting and scene-setting to character development, Beswick expanded his skill set as he poured his heart into the pages. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

The ending was a bit of a surprise, and too rushed but definitely has me intrigued and happy to read on in the series. How the horse, and the two female characters, are not dead from exhaustion and hyperthermia, I don't know. No backstory for any character so I couldn't really get a picture of what motivated them, what drove them on their quest. I could barely follow the characters on their adventure because of all the deaths, I mean people were dropping like flies.

From the first moment you are gripped and invested by all the characters and relationships created by Beswick. I wasn't anticipating a super great story based on the first novel, but since I'd already downloaded it to my kindle I decided to nice it a try, and I was pleasantly surprised! This sequel follows two main characters: Zerina, a young woman who is on the run for possessing illegal magical abilities, and Ulrik, a sailor who must protect his young sister, Esara, after their mother is murdered for her magical powers. I'm also confused as to what sort of magical horse Beswick has invented that three people can ride on it, not be unseated by its 'bucks', and it's still capable of speed.

This is the second book set in these lands and although not directly linked to AFOVAV I would recommend reading that one first due to some character mention overlaps and the scene is set in the first one. The story was interesting perhaps caused in part because I was not yet familiar with the underlying folk tale. Some of them had nice interactions on the (very short, page count-wise) sailing section and then we get to the end and watch half of them get slaughtered in an attack and I couldn't even tell you their names.

Instead, I get a man who tries to run his horse to death, almost lets his sister's saviour freeze to death and a ship that by all rights should have sunk the second they left the harbour. While the concept for his first novel was conceived six years ago, it was the nightly ritual of crafting bedtime stories for his children that really empowered him to breathe life into it.
