Banner is interested in the tradition of the nude and the issues that surround its depiction, such as questions about gender and the history of description per se. The spatial arrangement of the lettering, with white over receding black, suggests a shadow or space a person might inhabit. The way in which the text is laid out, written in staggered blocks which increase in width as they progress down the painting, reinforces a strong sculptural presence in the work. First, I did some work with a striptease artist where I described her act verbally, then stripped the context back further so all I was left with was the nude.

In this exhibition the artist looks at how we mythologize history, and our willingness to be seduced by those myths. is a four metre stack of Jane’s All the World’s Aircraft books, the iconic compendium for the aeronautical industry.She has explained, ‘I thought it would be interesting to strip off all the narrative and the mediation of the film image, and just look at the figure. In the lower gallery are a series of books and prints selected from Banner’s own publishing imprint, The Vanity Press.

The Vanity Press has also reissued three largely forgotten science fiction novels written by the founder of Jane’s All the World’s Aircraft, Fred T. Often using parts of military aircraft as the support for these descriptions, Banner juxtaposes the brutal and the sensual, performing an almost complete cycle of intimacy and alienation.

These ‘wordscapes’ define the shapes and forms of the body as well as fleeting moments such as the tension in a second of shared eye contact, or a nervous finger tapping. Banner’s print Superhuman Nude is taken from a nude study of a Paralympic athlete wearing a prosthetic leg.

In response to requests from the Legal Deposit Office The Vanity Press produced a comprehensive bound catalogue of the ISBN artworks and the data information forms used to register them. Tracing the history of Britain’s military investment back to the fear of invasion, her epic wall drawing 1066 describes in words this decisive battle of England’s last invasion.
