Okay, so keeping that in mind, I still picked up this book and I was wowed… Not in a spiritual sense mind you. Sarah bit her lip at the coldness in Papa’s voice, but before she could speak, Mama touched her shoulder gently. When she discovers that Paul is married to Miriam, and that Michael is still waiting for her after three years of absence, her whole world falls apart and she no longer feels justified in staying in San Francisco.

Why would our default assumption be that this person is heartless and mean as opposed to having a good heart? As for Angel, for all of the mistakes and sins she committed, I still held a soft spot for her and cared for her character deeply, and that never wavered. Mae was urged to abort the child, but refused to do so, and her decision separated the two and left Mae depressed. If someone came sprinting through Manhattan traffic to catch you on the other side of the street, wouldn't you question his sanity?Alex eventually cuts off support for Mae, obliging her to become a prostitute and eventually become sick and die. Anyway, it was definitely the best book I've read all year, and probably one of the best books I've EVER read. He [Jesus] gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing what is right. The real, biblical Hosea kept after his wife, chasing her down and dragging her out of sin even when she made the choice to go back into it. Okay, having children if you want them is all great, but are we really implying that women who can't have children, or perhaps end up with men who can't, have meaningless lives?

And in a way, it proved that although food and water are needed to nourish our bodies, they may not be as important to our survival as faith and hope and trust. Francine Rivers made it abundantly clear (her main character is named Michael Hosea for goodness sake and she references the book a thousand times). Just because she based the book off of a bible story does not mean that she did a good job writing this novel. At first he acts cold, contemptuous, and sarcastic, but is startled by her humility and the genuine love she harbors for Michael.

Sex or sexual desire can be something a man wrestles with a little without becoming a crazed sex maniac who bangs his brother's wife on the side of the road. I suppose that's a somewhat enlightened view of things, and I wouldn't expect that many men of god living during the gold rush would be too excited at the prospect of making a hooker into a wife. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love really is.She gets a ride with Michael's brother-in-law, Paul, who resents her because of her past and demands that she pay him for the ride by having sex with him. Now, I don't know enough about the romance genre to say whether this is endemic within it, but I have seen my fair share of romantic comedies, and there is a sort of love narrative that I don't approve of. Sarah, aka, Angel is a beautiful, damaged woman who remains a prisoner of a past that heartlessly sold her into prostitution as a child. There, in a moment of desperation, she regains the faith she lost after her mother's death and tells the audience about Duke's sexual trafficking of young girls. Penniless and alone, she was quickly drawn right back into the life she had tried so hard to escape.

This is a difficult book to rate because at times it’s a 1 and then a 3 and I can even see how readers could give it a 5 star rating. Redeeming Love continues to be one of the Christian Booksellers Association's top-selling titles, and it has held a spot on the Christian bestsellers list for nearly a decade. Well, I’m good with that and willing to own it because it’s books like Redeeming Love that remind me some of them are just worth it. Our theme read in the Unapologetic Romance Readers group for the month of May was "christian romance," and REDEEMING LOVE was actually my nomination.Redemption (the supposed theme of this book) should lead to a complete transformation of heart and life. I brought that swan back from Europe for you, and you throw it away on a child who has no appreciation for its value.
