About this deal

In 2000, Granny D received a special Martin Luther King Award from the Manchester, New Hampshire-based Martin Luther King Coalition. Haddock's walk across the country followed a southern route and took more than a year to complete, starting on January 1, 1999, in southern California and ending in Washington, D. As a young man it was good to listen her stories and weep with her over the weary road, and learn how she came through scarred yet stronger.

I would pick her up in my small green Saturn station-wagon and we would eat breakfast at Bob Evans or have vegetable soup and cold cuts at her apartment [I think that was the only thing she knew how to cook! She worked during the Great Depression and was employed for twenty years as an executive secretary in the offices of the BeeBee Shoe factory in Manchester, New Hampshire. During her 1999 walk across the nation, the hat that Haddock was seen in was one that belonged originally to her best friend. Haddock requested a name change of her middle name to "Granny D", the name by which she had long been known. Your Honor, to the business at hand: the old woman who stands before you was arrested for reading the Declaration of Independence in America's Capitol Building.

Drawing inspiration from her Croatian and Polish roots, Denise embarked on a quest to recreate the authentic pierogi experience for those longing for their homestyle favorites. But, Your Honor, some of us do not have much power, except to put our bodies in the way of an injustice--to picket, to walk, or to just stand in the way. Shortly after that we were asked to include soul food and bar-b-q plates to our menu and we were off!I was impressed by Granny D's grace in dealing with the people she met during her walk, including those who wanted to walk along. Earthly relationships sought to beat, bruise and break her externally and internally, but she fought through the pain, bitterness and brokenness only to come forth as a faithful follower of Christ. Dee Marion was a loving sister, an exceptional mom, an endearing grandmother, a “great” grandmother, and a godly gal who will be missed by our church.
