About this deal

One of the reasons I’ve been reading this trilogy – starting with The Killer Angels – is to really be able to wrap my head around this war. I’ve always known that slavery was the root cause, but I couldn’t understand why the entire south would fight so HARD…. Just to keep slaves?? I mean, I can see why the wealthy southerners wanted to hang on to their free labor... But there had to be more to it. I'd never thought to deeply about the Civil war until this school year. Now, with this book coming to top off my school year, I must say Gods and Generals covers the lead-up to the American Civil War, and the war itself, from 1858 to 1863. Then there are 3 more books used by Liardon. One more from Gordan Lindsay, one from Wilford Reidt and one from Ken and Gloria Copeland. The problem with all these works is they present a fawning one-sided largely uncritical view of John G Lake. Again, no problem with these works per se. However, in my view they are nothing more than sycophantic hero worship of John G Lake. Following the Lord Jesus seven days a week is a very good thing to do but unfortunately is not possible for any of us to accomplish completely and certainly cannot be a requirement to obtain blessings and power from God. Also, none of the disciples nor Paul nor any of the church fathers were able to accomplish this task – but Allen was?

Marie Woodworth-Etter was portrayed as the most saintly person in the book. I believe it is for this reason that she held such influence on people—especially future ministers. The trance phenomenon surrounding her ministry is fascinating. I would like to find more books—and wow, would I like to find her own rare works which Liardon mentioned he has copies of! Aimee Semple McPherson, the 8th of "God's Generals", according to Roberts Liardon appeared to have moments in her career where she seemed to preach the Gospel - example: "Whatever fancy name you give it, sin is sin . . . God looks on the heart and as for holiness, why, without holiness no man shall see the Lord. We must be saved, we must be sanctified, but 'tis all through the precious atoning blood of Jesus Christ." But the vast majority of her preaching was avoiding talk of sin and hell and preceded Joel Osteen's positive-only messages by a century or so. Many scandals were noted in her career, including: abandoning her husband, divorce, not seeing her two children for at least two years, an association with the KKK, faking an abduction to cover up an affair with a married man, breaking her mother's nose, financial improprieties, questionable healings, and her death by drug overdose. And yet, to Liardon and many Charismatics, she is a general if not a Saint! As Scripture says of false teachers, "by their fruit you will know them." This book was actually an amazing book! Getting to hear about the lives of these amazing revivalists was so cool! I think a major reason the author decided to write this book was that people tend to only hear about the miracles these people have done or how many people they were able to bring to christ instead of their full lives and the little details we miss out on.

Gods and Generals: Extended Director's Cut Blu-ray Review | High Def Digest". bluray.highdefdigest.com . Retrieved November 19, 2020. The conflict is handled with solemnity worthy of a memorial service. The music, when it is not funereal, sounds like the band playing during the commencement exercises at a sad university. Countless extras line up, march forward and shoot at each other. They die like flies. That part is accurate, although the stench, the blood and the cries of pain are tastefully held to the PG-13 standard. What we know about the war from the photographs of Mathew Brady, the poems of Walt Whitman and the documentaries of Ken Burns is not duplicated here. But we do know through human nature such writings can be rather self-serving. A good historian knows how to separate the wheat from the chaff and present a balanced view. Sometimes more can be gleaned from what a person doesn't say as opposed to what he does say. Silence can be indeed deafening. And a discerning historian knows how to point that out.

In the first chronological book of the series we are transported to the last few years before the start of the war and we continue until the spring of 1863, having followed closely all the fighting in the main theater of operations in Virginia. Expectantly the issue that dominates are these war conflicts and I can say that the author does really amazing work in this area. The way he describes the battles is very exciting and manages to put the reader in their hearts, making the reader to be next to the participants, knowing all the emotions caused by the intensity of the battle while at the same time the author gives the very important historical details for them, making us understand them better. Reading about these battles at the same time, I understand that this description is very accurate, which of course I highly appreciate. Aimee Semple McPherson was very strange — Hollywood strange made even more strange by Pentecostal strangeness. A fascinating life. Originally running over five hours in length, the film was cut by an hour and a half for its 2003 theatrical release, with the full "Extended Director's Cut" being released eight years later in 2011. [7] The film was both a critical and commercial failure. Although film critics complimented its performances and historically accurate details such as costumes, they criticized its length, pacing, and screenplay. [8] [9] [10] The consensus of critics was that it had a "pro-Confederate slant". [8] The Southern Poverty Law Center, as well as numerous writers, pointed out that the film endorsed the " Lost Cause" myth. [11]I loved the way the author remained respectful even when bringing up things that were controversial. I think it is super important to have that skill when writing about someone's life like that. They know ok they did this and it was wrong however i am still going to be respectful and keep unbiased about the whole situation. A weakness I'd say has nothing to do with the author. I couldn't find many things as he was unbiased throughout. But it was interesting as most of the revivalists all had something to say against each other. Looking at Dowie towards Sister Etter was quite disturbing but also really interesting. Named after the famous healing evangelist, Oral Roberts, Roberts has a heart for revival and is internationally known as an author, public speaker, spiritual leader, church historian, and humanitarian. He is the pastor of Embassy International Church, a gifted speaker who has ministered in over 125 countries and his books have sold over 15 million copies. God’s Generals on GOD TV Dr. Liardon has established many churches and accredited Bible schools and is now building Embassy International Church in Orlando, Florida, an apostolic center to serve his community and the nations. It is also the headquarters of the Embassy Global Network, which provides a gathering place of support and encouragement for ministries and leaders. This is an unusual statement from a Charismatic preacher. They typically use John 14:12 as their promise verse to perform greater works than Christ. John 14:12 says, "“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father."” Of course, Charismatics err in thinking this means miracles – instead it most likely refers to preaching the Gospel more and further than Christ ever did. This statement, then, is not bad or heretical in itself. But let’s get to the main point that Allen is purporting – that God spoke to him personally. Hebrews 1:1-2 says, "Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world." Does God still speak to men – to His prophets? Hebrews would say otherwise. God has spoken to us and STILL speaks to us through His Son and through His Word! If the words of the prophets are God’s words then they hold as much weight as Scripture and should be taken with that level of authority and gravity. But, as we shall see, they are not and the words of most prophets actually conflict with the actual Word of God!

Then there are two more sources listed by Liardon from Lindsay that are sermons by John G Lake. Listed as number 15 and number 25 in the footnotes. Again, using his sermons is nothing more than yet even more autobiographical material. To be clear I am not rendering any judgement on his sermons. If you like them fine. Rather my point here is again this is more autobiographical material. And once again as with the previous items mentioned above nothing wrong about using such materials. In fact, you couldn’t write a book about Lake without using these materials. the cussing and profanity - there was a decent amount of crude language which I would have marked out if it wasn't a borrowed book. To be clear I am not criticizing Liardon for using the diary, the sermons or any other autobiographical material mentioned above. As I said earlier you couldn’t, wouldn’t or shouldn’t endeavor to write a biography without reviewing all known communications of the subject being discussed. Again, the unproven claptrap Liardon details and promotes in this book is in my opinion propaganda not history! This work of so-called history appears to be more concerned with doctrine rather than documentation. Those profiled in this book are more like a rogue’s gallery rather than God’s best. “God’s Generals”? Balderdash! I don’t think hardly any of these individuals even enlisted as privates! Through my research I can also debunk Lake’s statements concerning his time in Spokane Washington. Way too much information to include here. Once again Liardon just unquestioningly accepts at face value Lake’s claims and merely parrots them. It angers me a great deal that the information in this volume has been uncritically accepted as fact by so many. To me being a good Berean not only means searching the scriptures to see if these things be so but to also search for historic, scientific or any other facts to buttress the truth. And in my opinion, there is precious little truth found in this work.Maxwell blamed the decision to cut the film for a single theatrical release as the cause of its failure, saying "because we had to take so much out, I must confess the story-telling became disjointed in a way that we just couldn’t completely fix." [7] Historical response [ edit ] I do like these Shaara books because they (father and son) narrate these events in story form. It’s definitely more up close and personal than your average war book or biography. He writes good dialogue, and places you inside the heads of these characters – such famous people as Robert E Lee and Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. Shaara, Jeffrey (1998). Gods and Generals: A Novel of the Civil War (Civil War Trilogy). New York City: Ballantine Books. ISBN 978-0345422477. I'm especially inspired by Charles Finney's story. He started reading the Bible while he was studying law as he noticed that many writers quoted the Bible as an authority for principles of common law. This led him to start attending church and prayer meetings, during which he was convicted of his state as a sinner in need of salvation. However, he was very troubled by how people prayed but never seemed to receive answers. But he was in such anguish about his soul that he cried out to God. And God answered, filling with him so much love and peace that drove out all doubt, and baptised him in the Holy Spirit - he described it as "waves and waves of liquid love" and being filled from head to toe. Such an amazing and powerful conversion!
