They are ideal to use as independent, accessible activities whilst Y1 pupils are being homeschooled. SEND: Please ensure you complete tasks using any objects to enable skills to be embedded. Please ensure you work alongside your child, explaining the activities to ensure they can complete tasks with confidence. Use objects and pictorial representations, such as a number line, to identify and represent numbers. Be able to use terms such as equal to, less than, more than, least, most. Count in multiples of twos, fives and tens. Also, be able to read, write and count numbers up to 100 in numerals.

Each of these topics plays a key role in expanding children’s maths knowledge and developing their confidence in working with numbers. One is a Snail, Ten is a Crab by April Pulley Sayre and Jeff Sayre - Animals come in a wide array of shapes and sizes, and that includes how many legs they have. This wonderful storybook lets children learn how many legs a variety of animals have. Basic addition is included too. Another great way to practise measurements is to give your child the opportunity to measure ingredients when you are cooking or baking. BTW, we know how time-consuming it is to create or even find the resources to support your teaching. That’s why we’ve linked each of these aims to resources, specifically designed with each of these objectives in mind. We hope this makes your job a little bit easier!

The curriculum also aims to make sure children become fluent in the fundamental maths areas of study. This will be supported by consistent practice, so that pupils can develop their reasoning skills, too. Amongst the variety of skills developed through studying maths, problem-solving is a crucial one. The curriculum encourages pupils to solve a wide range of mathematical problems. This is great because problem-solving is not just a key skill for maths - it’s a skill for life. Explore fractions using some of your child’s favourite toys, for example teddies or cars. Ask your child to halve their toys by splitting them into two equal groups. So, for ten cars, make two groups of five. Similarly, practise finding one quarter by splitting toys into four equal groups. A huge focus of year 1 maths lessons is to ensure children develop fluency in working with whole numbers, counting and recognising the place value of each digit in a number. This is an important step in developing pupils’ number sense and building the foundations for working with larger numbers in the following school years.

Use concrete objects and pictorial representations to solve one-step addition and subtraction problems and missing number problems. In the first year of key stage 1, there are seven fundamental areas of study included in the maths curriculum. These are: Describe, compare and solve practical problems for mass/weight, lengths, heights, capacity, volume and time.At first, they will use non-standard units of measurement such as pencils, cubes, cups and similar objects before learning about metric and imperial units in the following school years. Identify the capacity/volume or mass/weight of ingredients you are using, either using scales or less formal methods like cupfuls. Discuss how and why we measure different ingredients with different units.
