About this deal

Since we’re on the subject, who let Cho fly on such abysmally slow broom to begin with?!? I get that not every team has a Lucius Malfoy who can drop thousands of galleons on a set of Nimbus 2001s, but some Ravenclaw fan has got to step up to make sure their Seeker isn’t going against the wizarding equivalent of a Ferrari with the likes of a 1981 Ford Pinto. Ravenclaws are supposed to be smart! There has to be at least one rich alum who loves Quidditch and doesn’t want to see their Seeker get embarrassed. But I digress. A Snitch is not touched by bare skin before it is released, not even by the maker, who wears gloves. It carries an enchantment by which it can identify the first human to lay hands upon it, in the case of disputed capture." — Description of a Flesh Memory [src] Muggles and wizards alike will definitely remember the Golden Snitch from the first Harry Potter film. Directed by Christopher Columbus, the movie first introduced Daniel Radcliffe as Harry, Rupert Grint as Ron, and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger. The film also followed Harrys first steps into the realm of Quidditch. It is believed that during one of the Quidditch matches on Bodmin Moor in 1884, the Golden Snitch evaded capture for about 6 months until the players from both sides finally forfeited the match.

The Golden Snitch, often simply called the Snitch, was the third and smallest ball used in Quidditch. It was a walnut-sized gold-coloured sphere with silver wings. It flew around the Quidditch field at high speeds, sometimes pausing and hovering in place. The Seeker's goal was to catch the Snitch before the other team's seeker, which was worth one-hundred and fifty points. The Quidditch World Cup [5] was held every four years since 1473. The competition saw Quidditch teams representing countries around the world to compete for the World Cup, while the International Quidditch Tournament was between regional teams. The game could only end when the Snitch had been caught, or by mutual agreement of the two teams' Captains; the latter was very rare, however, as one team would have had to have lost. [5] Going off of Ginny Weasley's statement, it would appear Snitches flew at varying speeds, or at least can wear out.

The Golden Snitch first appeared in the Harry Potter series in Harry Potterand the Philosopher’s Stonewhen Oliver Wood, the captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team introduced Harry to the game of Quidditch at the Hogwarts Quidditch grounds. He first presents all the balls used in a Quidditch game, starting with the Quaffle and then the Bludger. Finally, he unveils the Golden Snitch and tells Harry that this is the ball that Harry, as the Seeker must be paying attention to. Quidditch was a hugely popular spectator sport. One hundred thousand fans attended the 1994 Quidditch World Cup final. Binoculars and Omnioculars were sometimes used by fans to view matches from the stands. [4] As we mentioned previously, the Golden Snitch wasn’t always the small, walnut-sized ball found in modern Quidditch games. The Golden Snitch, as we know it today, was based on a design of an actual bird.During the match, the Snitch was sighted fairly early on by both Harry Potter and Terence Higgs. Harry was almost able to catch it, however, he was fouled by Marcus Flint before he could get close enough, and the Snitch vanished in the confusion. [1]

The rest of this season’s Quidditch matches were cancelled due to the Chamber of Secrets crisis so unfortunately this is all we get from Harry’s second year. 1993–94 Season Vs. Hufflepuff Match Summary At one point in the match, Harry notices from the stands that Ginny sees the Snitch fluttering by Kirke’s knee, but hesitates, perhaps costing her the catch. Gryffindor falls behind by 160 points when Ginny catches the Snitch out from under the Hufflepuff Seeker’s nose. That ends the match, but Hufflefpuff wins 240–230. Analysis The balls also show notable differences. Quidditch Through the Ages shows us that the Quaffle is a perfect sphere, but the movie and games' versions have four large indentations around its surface. In addition, the Bludgers in Quidditch Through the Ages are ten inches in diameter, two inches smaller than the Quaffle. In the movies and games, however, they appear much smaller than the Quaffle. The game started with the referee releasing all four balls from the central circle on the field. The Bludgers and Snitch were bewitched to fly off of their own accord, but the Quaffle was thrown into the air by the referee to signal the start of play (This is similar to how the games of basketball and Gaelic football, popular Muggle sports, begin by the referee throwing the ball in the air). In my opinion, a truly great Seeker shouldn’t need the announcer to tell them where the Snitch is. They should be able to find it themselves. Had Harry spotted the Snitch before all the players were made aware, he could’ve had a clear lead on Higgs. Instead they’re side by side for the initial chase. No substitution of players is allowed throughout the game, even if a player is too injured or tired to continue to play. (Note: According to Goblet of Fire, during the Quidditch World Cup, at some point it lasted for days, and the players had to be switched out so that they could get some sleep). [1] This ...is the Golden Snitch, and it's the most important ball of the lot. It's very hard to catch because it's so fast and difficult to see. It's the Seeker's job to catch it." — Description of a Golden Snitch [src]During the 1990–1991 school year, Snidgets were smuggled by at least three witches and wizards from the Somerset sanctuary. Jacob's sibling investigated this case with Alastor Moody and Nymphadora Tonks. [6] After Dumbledore’s death, Harry was bequeathed with a familiar item – the very first Golden Snitch he had ever caught. Dumbledore had cast a spell on the Snitch which would only be revealed when Harry placed the Snitch on his mouth and experienced self-acceptance. Though the Golden Snitch would fly digitally, many design studies were done to refine its aerodynamics. In the end, thin ribbed wings, almost in the form of a sail, were attached to a walnut-sized metal ball that combined art nouveau shapes with industrial design. From Gringotts bank to Rita Skeeter’s three golden teeth, the dark side of gold is sprinkled all over the wizarding world. When we first meet Dudley Dursley he is greedily tearing the wrapping paper off a gold watch while demanding more presents, and we instantly know the kind of person he is going to be.
