About this deal

The area around Tomintoul has both treeless moors and lush forests. It’s also diverse in the activities and adventures available across the local countryside. Tomintoul 10 year old single malt whisky was introduced to their core range in 2002. This happened two years after the distillery was bought by Angus Dundee. Tomintoul distillery can be found inside the beautiful Glenlivet estate, from the Speyside region. It’s been named after the highest village in the Highlands of Scotland, the nearby village of Tomintoul.

Nose: Fairly refined with notes of aniseed, furniture polish and caramel-glazed apples, as well as a touch of licorice root and marzipan. Whisper of vanilla cream too. Finally a sprinkle of cinnamon and apfelstrudel.Tomintoul is extraordinary in so many ways, including the quantity and variety of accommodations available. The Tomintoul-Glenlivet Distillery produces whiskies which are famous for being gentle. That’s why you might know this distillery as The Gentle Dram. After tasting this 10 year old, and their 16 year old, I couldn’t agree more with their tag line. Both, the 10 and 16 year old single malts have been matured in American Oak Ex-Bourbon casks. The estate is responsibly managed and well maintained. They advocate the outdoors and a healthy lifestyle. They even have a dedicated mountain bike centre at Glenlivet Bike Trails.Located on the northern edge of the Cairngorms National Park, Tomintoul is the highest village in Highlands. At 345 metres above sea level, it features spectacular landscapes, rugged mountains and, in the winter, regular snow. You are responsible for all activities through your account. Due to its location within the Cairngorms Dark Sky Park, Tomintoul is an ideal place to while away long winter nights stargazing and dreaming. Tomintoul is not only popular during the summer months but year-round. The Lecht Ski Centre attracts skiers and snowboarders while the ice-covered gorges attract winter climbers. There are also various self-catered options, from small cottages to houses and steadings. The Old Pine Yurt is a more unique way that allows you to connect with nature. You might’ve wondered already, but the whisky is chill-filtered, caramel-coloured and bottled at just 40%. Not exactly the stuff of dreams for the average whisky nerd. Then again, there’s a whole world of casual whisky drinkers out there for who Tomintoul is absolutely perfect. And to be totally honest, even at such a disadvantage Tomintoul’s single malt is rather pleasant. But you can just taste there’s potential for much more, also evidenced by a single cask release I reviewed last year. I’m not convinced Tomintoul will soon shift their approach and start catering to geeks, but if they ever decide to, I’m confident they’ll succeed. If my timing had been a little better I’d already have a distillery visit of Tomintoul under my belt. But during a brief business trip in 2018 I wasn’t able to pin down a date with their production manager, Graeme Bowie. After now having spent some virtual time with their Global Brand Ambassador and Master Blender Iain Forteath, I really hope to be able to drop by sometime soon (pandemic permitting of course). The village of Tomintoul is in a fantastic location as well. As for a bonus, The Whisky Castle in Tomintoul is a proper whisky specialist.Whiskybase B.V. (“Whiskybase”, “we” or “us”, company details below) offers a whisky enthusiasts online platform that provides its members access to the most comprehensive, transparent and trusted resource of whisky bottles and allows and stimulates its members to contribute information about whisky bottles to the platform (“Service”). The Duke built the village hoping to discourage cattle theft and illegal distilling in the area. Unlike Fochabers, (another village the Duke built), Tomintoul was forgotten and neglected. Time it right and you could experience a 200-years-old tradition: the Tomintoul Highland Games. Every third Saturday in July, the villagers (and guests) gather for a day of Scottish festivities. Dress appropriately – visitors are encouraged to join in the fun events. Tomintoul 10 is a flat, light and lifeless whisky and calling it “The Gentle Dram” is an understatement. It comes across like someone mixed a regular 40% whisky 40/60 with water. It’s easily one of the most boring whiskies I’ve ever had. It might sounds like I’m angry at this whisky, but I’ not. I’m disappointed.
