About this deal

The Lezyne Lite Drive 1000XL front and Lezyne KTV Pro Drive 75 rear lights are super well-made. Immediate Media There are no bleached spots of light on the trails and the impressive beam pattern is broad and well-controlled. With 1,000 lumens at full power, Lezyne’s Lite Drive 1000XL provides more than enough brightness and beam spread for riding on unlit roads. You’ll only get around 80 minutes at this power, but dropping it down to the second highest output (which sits at 500 lumens) provides just under three hours of run time, which ought to be enough for even the longest of commutes. The same goes for run times. In our tests, we timed each of the lights on their max setting to find out just how long the juice will last. Light output isn’t the only factor to consider, beam patterns are just as important. Some lights project their output into one specific area, illuminating everything within that space with exceptional detail, but that’s frequently at the expense of broader coverage.

The power of a bike light is usually expressed in lumens. Lumens are the unit by which the total amount of light emitted from a source is measured. There’s more than enough power to light up the most technical trails and it’s evenly spread with a gradual fade that provides incredible context. Plenty of light is projected downwards which also has beautiful hue. Even if you don’t head out with a 100% charged light, the countdown timer shows you exactly how much time you have left on each power level. With unrivalled power and a massive beam spread, the Monteer 12000 has the ability to turn night into day.Light colour balance is good, with the green and yellow hues avoiding dazzle. We found the mount didn’t hold the light quite securely enough though, so there was a tendency for the beam to drop down. There’s a GoPro-style mount included that should eliminate this. Lights that flood their output illuminate more of the trail’s surroundings, giving a better sense of where you are and highlight details easily missed with a more focused beam. This wider beam spread means it’s easier to see around turns, too – something that needs to be considered if you’re not running a dual-bar and lid-mounted setup.

When buying a set of lights, it’s also wise to consider the balance between the front and the rear.

Out on the trail, the Light & Motion Seca Enduro feels like it puts out a lot more than its claimed 2,500 lumens max power, showing that raw power numbers don’t always tell the whole story with lights. For example, 1000 lumens with a coverage of 1 square meter is 1000 lux. (1000/1) If you have 1000 lumens and your light covers 4 square meters, then it’s 250 lux. Lumens & Lux Explained The front light will almost always have much more power because its role includes lighting dark roads and cycle paths. However, while the outright lumen count of most rear lights won’t come close to the front, the spec is just as important. The head unit has a single button that illuminates blue when the light is in one of its three constant modes and red when it’s in its single flashing mode. The button also switches colour once the battery has 10 per cent or less charge remaining. It projected plenty of light downward, too, helping to avoid most of the shadows normally created going off drops, over jumps and up rises.
