About this deal

It's fast and logical: you select a module to work on and tweak the parameters with LED-ringed encoders. Indeed, it's possible to get so fixated on the encoders you entirely forget the dedicated controls. Incidentally, all controls send and respond to NRPNs, rather than the lower-resolution CCs. The resulting parameter changes are smooth and not constrained to 128 possible values. However, NRPNs aren't a perfect fit for step sequencing or generic controller duties, for example, while some expected CCs are ignored, such as CC7 (volume). It is extremely well thought out in terms of the human interface with 26 access buttons for each major function and 8 knobs to deal with parameters. Amending or starting a patch from new is a total breeze, I find myself able to put very 10 complex patches together in under an hour. If you are pondering applications for such glacial shifts, another parameter might offer clues: Freerun. Touch any key briefly, and a free-running envelope will progress through all its timed stages without further intervention. In a live situation, you can initiate complete ambient soundscapes while you nip off for a glass of sweet sherry. The 12dB and 24dB ladder filters are smooth and effective; they're accompanied by bass-compensated versions (Fat12 and Fat24) that don't sacrifice their bottom end to high resonance. And while you're unlikely to mistake the MS20 filters for the real thing, they offer worthy alternate responses. I don't know how accurate the Threeler filters are, but I liked the band-pass mode in particular; some of its cutoff and resonance combinations give strange, buzzy but interesting results.

Modal’s latest board includes all the great features of the Argon 8 but with a 61-note keyboard. Features include 120 wavetables, 32 static wavetable modifiers, 32 high-resolution wavetable oscillators, eight types of oscillator modifier and four filter types. If you’re looking for a sound that’ll surprise, inspire and frighten you at every opportunity it gets, the Hydrasynth is ready and waiting. As mentioned earlier, its virtual analog 8-voice polyphony is already exciting – but it becomes a different beast entirely when you dive into its full capability.

All three oscillators can access any of the 219 available waveforms; these include the expected analogue modelled waves, plus families of more exotic fare, with names such as Cluster, Flux, Vokz, Klangor and Scorpio. The tonal qualities of each are rich, varied and best experienced by trying them out while watching the oscilloscope. I did initially wonder whether a couple of hundred waves would be enough, but since the Hydrasynth offers myriad ways to twist, squash, mash and trash them, it should be ages before you try every combination. Finally, the Modulation Matrix offers 32 user-definable modulation routings are available for you to bridge 29 modulation sources and 155 modulation destinations. You can route the modulation in almost any direction, including the effects, arpeggiator and Modulation Matrix points. Specifications

What's more, you can loop the envelopes to create LFOs with shape can be voltage controlled with modulation matrix. Enter The Matrix But it doesn’t end there; two filters offer 12 modes in total, from LPG to 12dB octave-morphing. Then there’s the LFOs, 5 envelope generators, ring modulator, noise generator, mixer and effects (including modulation, ambience and more) so you can send your signal on whatever wild path you choose. Tactile User Interface With all of the buzz surrounding the reveal of the Deluxe and Explorer models, we thought it would be fun to spend some time diving into the sound design depths of the Hydrasynth to emerge with a handful of tips to enrich your own patch creation process. Most of these concepts may be exercised on any model of Hydrasynth (with one notable exception), and can serve as a jumping off point for other ideas within the incredibly versatile sound design engine. As well as performance controls, we saw earlier how straightforward it is to rope in conventional modulators. Of those, the five LFOs are identical, having all the expected waveforms, noise, plus a user waveform with up to eight steps. Each step of this 'almost sequencer' is programmed by those ever-present encoders, with a smoothing option if necessary. The problem about buying a machine like this is that it raises the bar so high that you need to go to Iridium/Kyra territory to be impressed. The next section is where you will find the CV ins/outs and arpeggiator, and an area called ‘main system’. This is where you change patches and banks, save, choose favourite patches, initialise, and – with a feature I also love on Korg's Wavestate – create patches out of thin air with the random button. Lets say, I'm incredibly glad I considered this synth and it is one of the most versatile and unique products I own -Favorite. The desktop version of Hydrasynth is equipped with a grid of polyaftertouch-enabled sensitive pads. More than that, the synthesizer also includes a complex arpeggiator with comprehensive options for the note sequencing, direction, and probability. I'm talking about the Yamaha CS‑80, of course. This mighty instrument, in the hands of virtuosos such as Vangelis, proved that synthesizers really could be responsive, expressive musical instruments after all. Macro setups can be stored and named, too, so that you can apply your favourite buttons’ macro setups to any of your custom patches. Much like ‘control routes’ on the Alesis Andromeda –which give you a way to ‘interrupt’ the mod paths – Macros can also control mod-matrix mod routes too,

Of course, there is more! Using the macro facility, each knob and related button can control eight user-assigned parameters at once – meaning that you can set up your go-to performance parameters and tweak them on fly during a performance or studio jam. Note: each button also has several trigger modes. Combining the performable keyboard setup with the advanced arpeggiation, CV and filter controls, the Hydrasynth becomes an intuitive, tactile unit that lets creativity flow freely. Filter 1 has 16 different models ranging from 1 to 8 poles, many with high-, band-, and low pass options. There is also a flexible vocal filter with formant control. Even if Filter 1 were the only filter the Hydrasynth had, it would take a lifetime to exhaust the possibilities. Set how the beautiful long ribbon controller affects sounds with the ribbon button. Hold the chord button until it flashes, then press up to eight notes and trigger them from one key – much like some classic polysynths. The ribbon is a very nifty thing indeed and can act as an instrument in its own right. Play it like a theremin. Alternatively, assign it modulation duties or use it to bend held notes/chords.The second filter works similarly to the classic SEM filter. It is a 12dB per octave and gives you a continuous sweep from Low pass, through bandpass and up to High Pass. Wavemorphing is a feature usually found on synths with preset wavetables. But creating user wavetables on those products is arduous or downright impossible. Unlike most wavetable synths, our oscillators 1 & 2 have our easy-to-use WAVELIST mode.

Because of the 24 polyphonic pressure sensitive pads, you can play the Hydrasynth Desktop synth without any external controllers. Filter 2: 12 dB (SEM-style) per octave, includes Continuous Sweep from lowpass, bandpass, up to highpass) Extremely expressive and with multiple pad layouts to choose from along with multiple scales, playing the Hydrasynth Desktop is fun, unique and inspiring. Oscillation and Mutation Three oscillators are on board the ASM Hydrasynth Desktop and give you the choice of 219 single cycle waveforms. PW-ASM: Divides the incoming wave into 8 slices and lets you set the amount of FM that is applied to each segment. This is FM unleashed.Designing sounds has never been so open and with the musical potential of the Hydrasynth, both you and your audience will be inspired by its performance. Buy the ASM Hydrasynth Desktop synth from PMT Online now and begin a musical journey with the Hydrasynth as your passport. Hydrasynth Firmware Update MusicRadar verdict: This is a very impressive debut release. The Hydrasynth looks and sounds great, dares you to explore it further – plus, it is impeccably built and fairly priced. There is a lot to like here. The web says Sine, triangle, Square, Saw up, Saw down, S&H, Low random, Noise, Pulse width 25%, Pulse Width 12.5%. You can set the levels and pan the input source with the mixer. A balance control allows you to adjust the amount of signal you route to each filter from each source.
