Whetstones are divided into two types depending on whether they need oil or water for lubrication to help the blade glide across the stone.Apply a couple of drops of general purpose oil to the abrasive side of the stone or soak in water for 5-10 minutes, depending on the type of stone. Either type is suitable for sharpening blades like knives and secateurs, just ensure the correct lubrication is used, otherwise the stone will spoil. You can buff along the blade in a circular motion, but do finish with a couple of sweeps to smooth the metal in one direction.
