About this deal

Since we learned a little more about how the lake house works and the “controls” of its ecosystem, which reminds me of The Sims in a way, it’ll be interesting to see how much of it is truly as it seems. I'm not saying the ending was horrible, because it wasn't, and they were smart enough to roll an emotional subplot through it. A mutual friend, Walter, invites ten people to stay in a fancy lakeside house in the country for a weekend getaway. I wonder if the name is derived from Walter Tevis, the author of, among others, The Man Who Fell to Earth?

I’ll save my full review for when the series completely wraps, but this first half is easily the best non-superhero Black Label book to come out. Many of these flashbacks serve as slight Eureka Moments and Once More, with Clarity to the characters remembering them, as they realise that they didn't really understand what he meant until it was too late.Though this falters much in the way a tv series often does by needing to fill more space than the plot requires so it occasionally feels either overstuffed or floundering along certain character plot lines to fill time while other ones play out. It said something to that affect on the blurb on title page and I'd have to actually agree in this case.

As their alien captor Walter explains to his favorite artist Ryan, this tragedy also provides a glimmer of hope, as it has brought the number of people in this enclosure to what his fellow overlords expected. It's the whole, "stay tuned, there's more to come" when we should have just been left with a "holy shit, what are they gonna do now? James Tynion IV and Alvaro Martinez Bueno struck gold with their Detective Comics and Justice League Dark collaborations, and they continue that hot streak here.

When Ryan gets into the interface, she tries to figure out how to disable the healing factor setting for Walter, and ends up turning it off for everyone. The ending appears to both wrap up the series while clearly not being the end, so I’m a little confused about whether or not this is indeed where it ends. until we get to the beginning of the story and see that she already had the respirator due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Affably Evil: Walter tells his friends that he genuinely loves them, which is why he is saving them.

When that deal was announced, Tynion assured fans that Nice House on the Lake "is just getting started, and we have big plans for its future. What makes Nice House such an essential story is not its science-fiction-tinged horror plot—Martinez Bueno's body horror is strangely gorgeous and unparalleled—but rather its unflinching look at complicated human relationships. He’s not human, so he doesn’t exactly understand why everyone is so obsessed with making contact with their friends and family outside of the lake house, especially when he knows they’re all dead. Tynion is just not quite clever enough to pull any more twists out, or at least at this frequency, as the few here feel a bit thin or frayed compared to the earlier ones (maybe it’s just the downside of reading a collected volume as opposed to the floppies). an era of communication breakdown and bodies sick and changing, transforming, and minds seeing through a glass darkly. Not a bad series, but the cumbersome and clunky aspects can drag the otherwise imaginative and creepy fun. A hefty chunk of this book is tedious flashbacks from when Walter met the person narrating that issue.
